Leaving on a jet plane...

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Tomorrow I officially go on my hols and I am very excited!! I am jet setting it all the way too..... Manchester! Oooo! lol!

Okay, so it's not the hottest place I could have picked, and I can't see any cocktails by the pool happening over the next few days but I will be in the company of one of my very fav people, and in my head thats what holidays are all about! That and the plan to do no computer work what-so-ever. Which is why today I'm running around like a headless chicken and tidying up last minute jobs and orders!

But before I go I'm going to post some shots I took over the weekend!! These are of Miss Erin who I couldn't help but get in front of my camera again! We (Erin, the missing Vanessa who we keep trying to get into a photo but she flatly refuses, and Jay who came along to take some snaps too) battled marshy (yet icy) fields, were defiant of the 'bad luck' that seems to hit every time after we visit this location, and we even conquered the fear of possible ghosts (Me and Vanessa) in an old house ruins to get these pics. These are just a few, but some of my faves! Great way to spend a very cold Sunday! Thanks guys! xo

Thanks for the fun shoot!

Erin

Vanessa contacted me before Christmas and told me that she wanted to book a portrait session for her best friend, Erin. I booked her in for January and didn't think too much about it. Christmas came and went, so did new year and then January hit me like a ton of bricks. A family bereavement took me and my family to Amsterdam and when I returned home I had no desire to go near my camera. I even cancelled my flights to london where I had planned to head to the SWPP convention for a few days. But BOY did things change when Erin stepped in front of my camera!

Janine and I had said via email how much fun it would be to do a wee session together and on Wednesday that is exactly what we did! Erin, Vanessa and I headed to Portadown to the location that Janine promised would blow our socks off, and well, you can see it for yourself...

Anyone else think Erin looks like Heidi from the Sugababes in the above photo?
Can you say gorgeous?!

I have never used a location like this and I have to say I really think Janine picked well! We HAD to use the graffiti in our shots

Erin has the most amazing eyelashes

These last few may just be amongst my absolute faves...

Doesn't she also look like Kirsten Dunst in this next photo?!

Erin bought a bowler hat...
How cool is she!

If you are a friend on my facebook be sure to check out more of Erin's shots!

Be sure to check out Janine's photos of Erin on her blog too!

Erin you were beyond awesome and although these photos don't show it, thank you for being so much fun and having such a laugh during our afternoon ; )

Superman

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

I had only gone to my room to quickly get changed when this evenings sunset brought me to my window. Golden hour had mostly gone and twilight was slowly bringing in the stars and it was then as I was watching the evening sky change that I spotted the plane flying across the sky with its vapour trail following along behind it.

When we were kids my mum used to say, 'There goes Superman...' and being a massive Superman fan (still am) that gave me the greatest comfort. Tonight after a horrible horrible week, that tiny vapour trail outside my window, again,  gave me the greatest comfort.

Yes... I know it's only a plane, but old memories never fade and when you were a child everything was magic and anything was possible. Which is why I ended up sitting there in a darkened room for far longer than I should have, watching the night sky change colour and remembering some lovely times.

John, you will be greatly missed by all of us xox

Happy New Year!!

Friday, January 1, 2010

Wow. Where did the past year go?

Ten years ago I was 17 years old and I had just celebrated the Millennium in Belfast City with my mum, dad and twin sister. For reasons that I will explain, this was pretty epic for me. On that night I took a photo of fireworks over the Waterfront Hall and that's when things began to change for me. When that film was developed and we came across that picture I was at first disappointed because essentially it was a blurred photo, the fireworks had turned into swirly blurs and the lines and features of the Waterfront Hall itself had become swirly lines...pretty cool actually! The more people who saw it began to say, 'you should take more photos...'(I've been trying to find this photo but currently my search through old photos has been in vain!) and so I did =)

At 16 years old I had been diagnosed with the illness Fibromyalgia. The medication dosage for pain relief was so high that by 7:30pm each night I was pretty much doped out and put to bed by my family. In fact I don't remember a lot of that time. That sounds quite melodramatic when I read it over, but it is the truth. I honestly don't. I remember moments of being woken up because I'd obviously fallen asleep somewhere other than my bed and having to then be taken to bed, and the only reason I remember those moments is because of how annoying it was to have to be woken up when all I desperately wanted to do was sleep. I also remember trying really hard to study and make it to my media classes each day. Most of the days I made it in, and some of those days I had to be sent back home again because the pain was so bad. But determination is a funny old thing. I finished my course with the best results possible and went on to study further in it. Because it was somewhere in the middle of my 17th year that I had treatment called Bio Cranial Therapy that set me back on the track of getting better. Charles Delepoulle was the absolutely lovely man who gave me those months of treatments, and I really don't think that I would be the person I am today without him. In fact I believe that without those treatments I would still be unwell today.

Now 10 years on I have had an AMAZING year and I struggle to believe it myself that I have just completed 12 weddings in my first year of business. Now, there have been moments in the past year where I've been very hard on myself for getting something wrong, or not thinking I'm good enough. Moments of being cross with myself and wishing I was more confident and not speaking up when I should have done. In fact there have been some moments where it would have been very easy for me to put my camera down and not pick it up again. But then I sit and think of the past 10 years and I think of just how far I have come and how many obstacles I have climbed and made it through. And I wish to say now to all the people who have believed in me and told me to keep going, and to all my clients who continue to book me - thank you SO much. You have no idea just how much it means to me.

2010 looks to be an exciting year and I really can not wait to get started. I was even booked to photograph my first wedding outside of Northern Ireland, so watch out Essex, I shall be coming your way in October for Gregory and Ann's wedding =)

Thank you to everyone who has given me encouragement! I can't thank you enough for it! Let's see where 2010 takes us!

And thank you also to Charles for your recent email and reminding me just how long this journey has been.

Lots and LOTS of new year love and wishes xox

P.S And what is a post without a photo, here is a picture of my niece Darcey taken a few days before Christmas - drama queen or what?! ; )

P.P.S She was singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star!

Alison and James {The Wedding}

| |

On the 29th December I woke up to a blustery cold cold day! And, pretty much the weather just got worse! But James and Alison did not let the weather dampen their love for each other. James and Alison happily stood out in the freezing cold (although you'd never be able to tell from their expressions) and boy did they bring it to the camera! A little trifle like the weather wasn't about to dampen their big day.

It was pretty cold in the foyer to the church, but you wouldn't be able to tell looking at these two!

Ali arrived a fashionable half hour late!

I love this. The room they signed the register in was very small so only Bride, Groom and witnesses were allowed in until the legal part was out of the way, but I love that Ali turned round and did this =)

I have a clear shot of this same set up, but this one where the wind whipped Ali's veil to my camera is my fave!

MAJOR thanks has to go to The Manor Cafe in Donaghadee and that they let us in to their gardens (which is currently closed for Winter) for photographs. Had we not been able to get in I would only have been able to get indoor shots as by this stage the wind had gone wild. This gem of a garden is surrounded by walls, and protected from the wild winds, which in turn gave us the opportunity to get some awesome photos =)

Gorgeous

Their reception was held in the newly re-built Sailing Club in Donaghadee, and what they created in the inside especially for Alison and James's big day was nothing shot of breathtaking

I know you were hoping to arrive to your honeymoon just in time to get to the closest beach with glasses of wine and to celebrate the new year together on the beach, and I hope that that was the case. Have an amazing 2010 and I will see you soon xox

Ali and James {The Engagement Session}

| |

Well, what can I say about these two! Except that weather seemed to play a big part in our photographing experiences together!!

Ali and James both live in Portsmouth but Alison is originally from Donaghadee, which is where they chose to get married on the 29th December. They also returned to The Dee to spend Christmas with Alison's family and we decided on photographing their engagement session on the 20th December. When I woke up that morning, to my utter joy Donaghadee was covered in snow and past experiences tells me that snow doesn't usually stay too long here with us being so close to the sea, so we decided to bring their session forward from an afternoon to a mid morning to try to capture the snow in photos...

Their session ended with the car we were traveling in being hit by another on an icy country lane, our car being hit off the side of the road and having it rescued by a tractor! Thankfully nobody was hurt but stiff drinks were held more in favour than photographing after that experience and we decided to put it off until the day before Christmas Eve.

The cold/icy/snowy weather stuck around for much longer and that morning on my trip to Hillsborough to pick up wedding albums and reprint orders, I experienced another icy road trip that was absolutely horrendous to drive on and resulted in our car sliding backwards down hills 4 times (I still find it amazing we weren't hit by any cars ahead or behind us!). So there will be no last minute orders being made in 2010 to make me have to experience that again lol!

(taken on my ancient mobile camera phone - but that was pure slippy ice!)

Anyway, when I did get home, I packed up my gear to meet Ali and James once again, and to my delight we ended up with these...

The clock tower in the background is the church they got married in 6 days later =)

Thank you for scaling the Moat with me and its icy steps! Definitely worth it I think =)
