It completely hit me out of the blue this morning. The fact that I missed the smell of Harry's dog feet.
For any of you who have never had the joy of owning a dog you will think that that last sentence sounds pretty disgusting. Dog feet smell, how can that smell be something you could miss?
But if you have ever chased your dog around a garden/room/field, grabbed him when you've caught him and played with him on the ground and not cared whether you got dirty or covered in dog hair/slabber, you will undoubtedly have smelt the comforting warm smell of dog feet. In fact if you've ever tried to wrestle your dog out of his favourite warm patch on the sofa so you can have it to watch the tv because it is after all the best seat in the house for TV viewing, and then had your dog decide he wants it too and he will either lay down as squished up against you as possilble, or failing that, sit on top of you...you will have smelt it.
Or if you were like me, you simply loved your dog and the smell of his feet was one of the best and most comforting smells in the world (up there with peat burning on the fire in winter) you will miss it when you can't do it anymore.
